My first child was born with Jaundice. She was 3 weeks premature and the doctor cut her head during vacuum extraction, which we were told increased the problem. She was under lights in the hospital and in a bili-blanket for several days after we went home. My son was born full-term and did not have Jaundice.
Jaundice seen in the newborn, known as neonatal jaundice, is common, occurring in almost every newborn because the body's system for conjugation and excretion of bilirubin does not fully mature until approximately two weeks of age.
Neonatal jaundice is usually harmless: this condition is often seen in infants around the second day after birth, lasting till day 8 in normal births, or to around day 14 in premature births. Serum bilirubin normally drops to a low level without any intervention required: the jaundice is presumably a consequence of metabolic and physiological adjustments after birth.

My first son was jaundice and was under the lights as well. He was also 10 days late and that played a factor in his jaundice. Premature babies are more at risk for jaundice as well.
My second son had jaundice as well. He was born a week early but the jaundice went away on its own. He never needed the lights as it was only a slight case. I think it was gone within 4 days.
Good luck and happy birthing.

I think all babies have a little jaundice and there is no way to tell if a second child will need to stay in the hospital.
I have 3 kids--only 1 had to stay because of jaundice.
As for blood types---that does NOT have anything to do with it. The kid who stayed was the exact same blood type as me.
I would wonder if being born early would make it more likely---ask your OB.

I only have one daughter and she had jaundice! Jaundice isn't hereditary or anything but is caused be certain factors during or after the birthing process. Baby's can be jaundiced for many reasons including prematurity and if the child may have an illness.
I can't tell you that your child may or may not have jaundice but I can certainly wish you the best of luck!

I had one with jaundice. I have had four total. I learned that my baby being a different blood type than me is what causes this. I don't think that is something that would probably be checked before the baby is born. Also, if they don't have a very bad case of it, they can just be laid in the sun for about 10-20 minutes 3-4 times a day.

Most babies are born with Jaundice. It just means that there liver is not functioning as well as it should. Jaundice will clear up on its own eventually, it should not be life-threatening. When most children are born, this is common. My doctor told me to make sure I get them out in the sunlight for the first few days, if a artificial light is unavailable. Don't stress over it. Happens to almost every new Mom.

babies who are born early usually get jaundice more. It's because their liver doesn't work the same in the womb as it does once their born. It's no big deal, they usually recover from that pretty quickly once their bodies adjust to live "on the outside"

my son was born with it, but didn't need the lights. His doc said it's more common if a sibling has had it,or it runs in the family. so your 2nd child may possibly have it.
