I have a Compaq presario running windows XP. Yesterday, out of the blue, my sound stopped working. I was able to get the sound to start working with Itunes and Quicktime player, but i can not get the regular windows (videos and pc sounds) to work. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my realtek AC97 audio driver several times. It still shows no "no audio devise". There are no conflicts in my devise manager...any answers?

The same thing happened to me on my wife's computer. It turned out that the sound card was 5 years old and was no longer supported by update drivers and XP didn't know how to recognise it. I just bought a new sound card.

Well, you can try using the newest drivers from Realtek, download them here: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=23&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#AC.

I have the same problem, but havn't tried these new drivers. To be honest, I'm suprised you actually did have it working for a while.

One other thing you could try is System Restore. Go to Start -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore. Just choose a point that you know the sound was working and cross your fingers. BTW this will not affect any songs pictures or other files you have saved recently, but it will roll back any changes to programs or drivers.

if anything, try doing a system restore and see if it brings it back. Make sure you restore to an earlier date when you had sound
