a few years ago i tried to commit suicide. i have a very serious clinical depression. the doctors gave me 5 different drugs to use and they made me feel horrible. i started taking st johns wort and several multivitamins instead and after about 4 months i was feeling much better. i used them for several months and am now no longer on them at all. i still take my vitamins and a st johns wort every so often when im feeling blue. DO NOT STOP taking any medicine you may be on without telling your doctor first if you are taking any. i had no side effects from the st johns wort like i did while on the depression meds.

I've dealt with depression for years. I've been on prescription antidepressents to deal. The past several years though, I haven't needed the prescriptions. I just use St. Johns Wort. When I start to feel the depression creeping in (usually during winter as I think I have a bit of Seasonal Effective Disorder as well), I start to take the supplement. I don't ever feel any negative or obvious side effects. What I do notice is that my moods stay more balanced and "normal". Situations that would have caused over-reactions while depressed, I can react to the way a "normal" person would. It's like I'm given a chance to realize what I'm feeling before reacting than just reacting any which way the depression would cause. St. Johns Wort has saved me from years of therapy and drugs. I'd much rather take the natural supplement than all that.

When I lost my job; I lost my health insurance. I did some research for something I could take to replace the paxil I was on. I found St John's Wort. And it did help and it cost a lot less. You should do some research to find the best dose for you to start. I would caution you though that you should stay out of direct sun light while taking it.

I also found that taking 5HTP worked very well and I didn't have to take as much.

The thing I like most about the alternative medicine was I didn't have the side effects that I had with the paxil.

I have recently started taking it to help with some of the mental symptoms of PMS. I feel calmer and not as much seems to be bothering me.
Good luck.
