means the driver is not installed, u should have gotten a disk with your dell machine, so right click on it and choose update driver and then choose automatic and follow the prompts this should install the driver. if not u would need to goto dells website and download the drivers from their.

Put in your Dell drivers disk, or motherboard disk, or Windows install disk, or the disk that came with the network card. Right click on the device, tell it to update driver, make sure it searchs the disk.

If that don't work uninstall the device and try each disk when you let the device reinstall at reboot.

If that don't work get a copy of X-Setup install it, classic interface, hardware, system settings, show phantom devices. Close X-Setup, if it wants to restart windows, let it. Open and arrange device manager for connections, show non present or hidden devices. Remove any grayed out devices except legacy and any that are flagged. Check the devices the bad one depends on for IRQs and other conflicts. Look in System Information for forced devices. Uninstall any found and repeat steps from the first and second stage.

If that don't work get a copy of unknown devices and/or unknown device identifier, and/or Everest and find out exactly what the device name and number are and search for it on the internet.

If that don't work backup your personal data, uninstall device and any forced, grayed out, and irregular devices, Put in XP disk and do an upgrade or repair install at boot.

THis is a really common issue with dell, their drivers are retarded... you will have to 1) roll back the driver, if that doesnt work, then 2) uninstall and re-install if that doesnt work, then 3) contact dell and get them to send you the drivers for your NIC, or go to a friend and download it to a flash drive or c.d. best of luck and let me know how it goes..

The ? means you don't have the proper device drivers for that network adapter installed on the system, that's why the OS fails to enable the network adapter.
