Yahoo Games uses the more traditional scoring system, which is points based. Hong Kong style is all fan based. Fan is just a unit of scoring in some styles of Mahjong. It's much easier to score because you know certain hands are 5 fans. Or having your own flower would be worth 1 fan. Then, when you play, you can say each fan is worth 25 cents. Mahjong is my favorite card game. It's one of the few card games that can only have 4 people...no more, no less.
