It is perfectly all right for a woman to choose to wear a veil because she wants to. It is also perfectly all right for a woman to choose NOT to wear a veil.

When you can accept that women have the right to not wear the veil, we can more readily accept that one of your relatives might choose to wear one.

Because it is nonsensical for a woman to be carrying required photographic ID and also to be wearing a veil. Where photographic ID matters, then veils are out. If your religion says to wear a veil, then tough, find some country to live in where you will not need photographic ID.

Like Mohammed says it is okay to have 4 wives, but the law says no, so if you want 4 wives, go find a country where that's legal. Even Muslims haven't been stupid enough to demand a change in Western countries' laws about the number of wives. So they shouldn't be stupid enough to demand the right to wear a veil when there is a legal requirement for photographic ID.

In the UK, because we are a pluralistic, multicultural society and the women who are wearing the burk'ah are trying to make a point that they are different and not part of our society. They are saying that they do not wish to be assimilated. We know that there is no Koranic requirement to wear this mode of dress and that those who do so are trying to be, bluntly, just difficult. Also they insist on wearing it when it is totally inappropriate - eg when involved in the teaching of small children and their voice is indistinct and muffled. A female Muslim journalist, who would not normally wear the veil, working for a leading UK newspaper wore the burk'ah for a week and reported how quite impossible leading a normal life was wearing the item.

Why is the responsibility of wearing proper attire mostly a woman's issue? A man,in many societies, can appear with head uncovered, arms and chest bare and no issues arise. The Mahatma walked around in a loincloth and was accepted.Did the wife,Sarah, of our father in the faith,Abraham, wear a veil?

I would guess that it's a sign that you are Muslim, and In case you weren't aware, most of us Americans got a problem with Muslims. Maybe something to do with that 911 thing. But it's basically because a woman with a veil looks different, and we discriminate against people who look different (as a whole)

I personally do not like to see people wearing veils...
I like to see the face of someone I am talking to.
So much of speach is also facial expression and with a veil I am not able to see the expression. I think the inability to see the face hinders understanding.
