They are called special characters. They are created by holding down the "alt" key and entering a series of numbers.

For instance:

Alt + 1 =☺
Alt + 3 = ♥
Alt + 4 = ♦
Alt + 251 = √
Alt + 0134 = †
Alt + 0189 = ½

If you are using Notepad or Word Pad, click on Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools and select Character Map. If you are using Word, click in Insert, then Symbol. Go from there and enjoy!

you can have cute characters that only you can see (and others ☞with similar operating systems) and you can have globally(not just windows) chars!

☞one is right for your desktop and one is right for the internet.

☞the big world out there is based on UNICODE (http://unicode.org) when you paste chars make sure they are from a unicode source to a unicode source, or they won't make it all the way through, and thus they wont be smiley!

Does your charmap program do unicode?

§§§§ What symbols? ₤₤₤
♠♠♠♣♣♣♥♥♥♦♦♦♪♪♪♫♫♫

Just hit START, then RUN, and type in CHARMAP.

Copy and paste whatever you want. (Notice at the top there's a drop down list of fonts...there's a lotta stuff in there)
