Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings both have wonderful moral stories to tell and all older children (I would say 10 & up) should be encouraged to not only see the movies, but to read the books! Some fundamentalists think the idea of people using (Hollywood-style) magic is somehow evil; which is ridiculous in my book, but that is their objection to HP. LOTR I have not heard the objections to, so cannot comment. This movies get the kids to read! I say let them read whatever they want! They will learn more by reading than any way else.

There's always someone who will get the wrong message from the best of things.
But fantasy stories are not inherently good or bad just because they are fantasy stories. Both Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings are classic Good VS Evil stories where Good prevails through perseverance and faith.
But some people will say that magic is involved and so even the "Good" people are agents of Satan in these stories. The thing is, it's fantasy and obvous fanatasy at that. So it's a specious argument.
The morality stories in both are worthwhile for any child old enough to understand them. Certainly, some younger children will be frightened by them. But sanitizing all children's movies to the point where none of them is scary is as silly as making 3D monster movies complete with children being eaten alive and then showing them to a two-year old.
Good fiction involves tension and conflict. Sometimes conflict is scary. Most children understand this better than parents frequently are ready to accept.

GOOD INFLUENCE
the whole point of the books is good triumphing over evil. Plus it clues kids into the world around them through metaphors and personification. If these books are considered "bad" then people should take a look at the world they are creating for their children and grandchildren. *I.e, wars, pollution, destroying natural resources, at this rate, we will have to re-build the world from the ground up and what si influencing us now is rap and drugs and whatnot. They should think these books a blessing because they shove us gently into the real world instead of pitching us in head first...

NO!!! Life has bad sides to it as well as good. These books and movies do nothing more than dramatize that reality. It is OKAY for children to know that there is "badness" in the world. Granted....there may not be Orcs or Voldemorts but this is just a FICTIONAL element in a story!!
ANYTHING that gets a child to read these days is a GOOD THING!!!!

Stephanie meyers and the atrocity it truly is twilight might want to by no ability ever be compared to authentic literature....EVER. My 4 12 months previous might want to have written a extra useful novel than twilight, and with extra precise grammar. Lord of the earrings is my widespread novel of all time. it really is superbly written. splendidly imagined. that's the magnificent fantasy novel ever written. i actually love Harry Potter. i actually do. even though it purely won't be able to evaluate to Lord of the earrings. It purely isn't on a similar element. For video clips, i love the HP video clips extra useful. yet it really is because i did not like the Lord of the earrings video clips. They aggravated me and each and every time i imagine about them they serve to make me offended, so i will't watch them.

There are many weak minds out there. Look how many believe the DeVinci Code is real, or that Mike Moore is a prophet. So, it is dangerous to let little ones entertain ideas they are not ready to process before accepting or denying. The movies you listed may be seen as morality plays, or as advertisements for satan. Point of view is everything.

No-I think it expands kids' imaginations and hopefully gets them interested in books. I read the Lord of the Rings books as I kid and I don't worship the devil or anything :)

No! They are just fun movies. And, a whole lot better than some of the stuff they see on TV every day.
