Scholarly sources are those written by experts, social scientists, geographers, demographers, native writers of the country, not just sources you can get on the first few pages of a google search. You want to look for books or articles in journals and special databases on specific subjects.

Go to local Library, check out an online scholarly database there, like ProQuest, JStor, or CQ Press.
Go to their national government website
Go to the Travel or South Asian or Geography section of the library, and look for books on that country
Look up books on British colonialism in the 19th and 20th century in South Asia.
The old tried and true sources, Encyclopedia, Atlas, Social Studies book, etc...
