The benefits are the settlement if you happen to get it. First you have to prove loss due to the defamation. Anyone can say anything about someone else. You have to show that the defamation cost you a financial loss. Anyone can gossip and make derogatory remarks about someone else. It happens everyday but that is not considered grounds for a defamation lawsuit.

There are very few benefits of suing anybody for anything. The purpose of the law is to make a person "whole" after suffering some kind of damage. The notion that money can solve everything is of course false but it is the best we have to compensate somebody for their loss. So, if you are somehow defamed and are offended by the defamation to the point that you feel you have been damaged by it, then you seek compensation for the supposed loss. You have to be able to objectively prove that loss. When you win, you have the satisfaction of knowing that the system agreed with you and you have obtained your revenge over your tormentor. In the meantime, you have invested time, money and stress into the process. I always ask my clients what the process is worth to them. What are they willing to invest to prove their point. In most cases, it is not worth the time, stress or money to prove your point. Just ignore the offense and move on with your life. Be confident within yourself to know that the offending party is wrong and get over it. That is true in most cases. In the extraordinary case of major defamation and major loss due to the defamation, then a lawsuit may be your only recourse to make you whole. Only you can truly assess what the damage is worth. What have you suffered, and can you move on without worrying about what someone said about you.

depends on the situation on which this is based usually in most states you only have 1 to 2 years to bring a sue against someone for defamation of characters.... if you prove they have done so they the benefits are a cash payout..... nothing more and the judge usually determines the amount... if you are proved to be lien and that is not what happened you could be the one in trouble for filing a false law suit.. punishable with jail time and or fines.

You can get money; you can, as part of your settlement, seek other 'Equitable' relief, such as asking that they speak or print a retraction, you can "vindicate" yourself in a court of law to show that what they said or wrote was untrue.
Of course, don't forget the downside--you have to file a lawsuit. You (should) get an attorney. It's time consuming. It's costly. And, if the defaming party claims that what he said was true, your name could be dragged through the mud again.
