Terry Goodkind is very similar to Jordan. In interviews people have asked Jordan about what he thinks to which he replies in true Jordan fashion "I'm aware of Mr. Goodkind." There are a lot less characters but Aes Sedaiish characters and an epic farmboy hero. Great leading male character! I also enjoy Modesitt and Steven Brust. Modesitt has the epic philosophy aspect of the Wheel of Time and tends to address concepts that make you think. Steven Brust has a series about an assasin and the books can be read in any order which is exciting and interesting. He incorporates a nicely cynical sense of humor. Happy Reading!

Well, in my opinion Robert Jordan sort of summed up the entire genre. So, there will be nothing quite like that anywhere else.

I'd suggest you take a look at three rather large series.

LE Modesitt Jr's "Saga of Recluse" series is epic and has some wonderful ideas. If you read them in order, they sort of go back in time. Meaning the first book explains how the world works -- and the next books discover how the world works. Wonderful books.

Roger Zelazny's "Nine Princes of Amber" -- it's a classic five book romp with a few additional books added due to popularity. It begins here on Earth in modern times with a man waking up with amnesia. Excellent work.

Anne McCaffrey's "Pern Series" is probably 12 books, there is a time line through out the series with just few books that are not the main plot but a lot of fun. This is dragons and drama and love and fantasy -- that sort of thing, I love the world of Pern.

I enjoyed Jennifer Roberson's books, she's a fantastic writer.

If you have the stomach for it, you could read a series by George R. R. Martin, called 'A Song of Ice and Fire,'. The books are sort of grim (and explicitly sexual), but I love them. The writing style is wonderful. I was on Amazon, looking at the reviews for George Martin's series, and although most people liked it, the ones that didn't referred readers to Robert Jordan's novels, and that's how I started reading The Wheel of Time series. (I'm only on The Dragon Reborn, and I can't wait to finish and get the next one!)

I would recommend Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, the first book is Wizard's First Rule. The story lines are similar and even the characters are very similar. Both are long, epic, and they two authors have very similar writing styles, though Jordan tends to drag things out.

I loved (am loving) the series.

I recommend the following also:

The Beligrad Series by David Eddings
The Shanarra (sp?) books by Terry Brooks
The Middle-Earth Books by Tolkein
The books of Tad Williams
The books of Robin Hobb
The books of Jacklyn Carey

I'm also recomending that everyone read "American Gods" by Neil Gaimon. It's WONDERFUL.

My recommendation is "Justin Thyme" - a book I've just finished reading and am recommending to everyone. It's aimed at kids but has a cross-over adult appeal too ... at least, I thought so. It's part science fiction part fantasy ... sort of science-fantasy! The chapters are interspersed with time travel theories. Well, I enjoyed it anyway; it's a lot of fun, but scientifically sound too.
Here's a link to it on Amazon

There's a web site too - might be worth checking out.
