You can download music from wherever you want and put it on a nano or any Ipod for that matter
BUT
if you download it through iTunes you can only put it on an Ipod (any model)
so you cant download songs through iTunes then put them on a non-apple mp3 player
iTunes downloads a script or code with the song to stop you putting it on other non-apple devices (basically to stop you sending the songs to your firends and allowing them to use it)

You can download you music from whereever you want although Itunes is legal and probably the best way to get it onto your Ipod.

Don't forget you can copy your old CD's onto your iPod/ iTunes library too. Not sure if this is strictly legal but you already paid for them! I don't use iTunes any more - too expensive. I know people who use www.allofmp3.com which is cheaper and they say its legal. Happy listening!

no you can download songs from anywhere though itunes is most reliable but aslong as you import the file into itunes

you can load any song as long as it is mp3 format. you can try limewire and newsgroups too. i do it all the time. you can even add those songs to your itunes library.
