Hey, I was thinking about a similar question! I know some people can't love children who are not their own 'blood', but I feel all children are the same and I'd happily adopt any orphan. I don't know about the expenses, so can't comment on that, altough I had a school teacher who wasn't even very rich, but he had an adopted child....? So maybe there are different ways of adoption, from less to more expensive.
The 'problem' is that people find it more logical to have their own child. It's more unique, has their features and their genes. It's a symbol of their love and relation with their partner. Till some extent, I can understand this and I feel there's nothing wrong with it either. Bearing your own child is a unique experience and why would you deprive yourself from it? It might sound egoistic, but it's rather logical and a matter of emotional attachment.
However, when a couple can't have children for some reason, why would we prefer to go for IVF, surrogate mother or other treatments? In this case, I do believe adoption is a far better option and a way of accepting it as God's wish, while you still get the pleasures of nurturing a child. Also when you can afford it, I think adopting an orphan and giving him/ her not just your money, but your love also, is one of the most nobel things we can do as human beings.
A solution to overpopulation in my opinion is stopping the birth of an unwanted child by taking sufficient precautions (abortion is not option imo!). Besides, people need to realise that it's not important to have many children, instead it's more important to give enough love and care to each of them. I don't know why people who can't afford it decide to have many children. I'd rather have one or two and take proper care of them! And last but not least, giving birth to more and more children just waiting for a son to be born, is something that needs to stop also!

Why would the growing population and the fact that there are children in orphanages stop me from having my own children? My children were created in me , by the man that I love. My children were loved by us long before we met them. When each of my children inside me, began to grow I knew that child bearing was a miracle and a gift. When they were born and we met face to face I cried tears of joy not sorrow. The earth will never become over populated, there may be areas on the earth where people chose to crowd themselves into, but this earth is far to vast to even consider overpopulation. As far as children in orphanages...well, I pray they will become adults who will love their own children and do whatever it takes to love and care for them . As for me and my family the cycle of unloved children stopped within the hearts of my husband and myself.

Begetting children is like one getting a certificate or degree after one's own effort . Generally , people won't be proud of displaying somebody else's certificate as their own and secure any honour on the basis of somebody;s degree. That is bad when one can by his own effort secure a cetificate , by his own effort with a distinction.

some people just cant love one who is not of their own when it comes to raising kids. problem is its something we had for millions of years as a cruel side effect of the survival of the fitest thing, which is irrelevant now in this aspect. it'll be hard to get rid of. i know people who feel they cant love another's child as well as their own, and they are nice ppl so dont blame them in general.
thing is adopting rather than bringing in more kids is a rational idea, and when have humans been rational.

People want to continue their own blood lines. They want a physical expression of their love for one another. A lot more people would adopt if it wasn't so horribly expensive.

hey--i'm adopting a tsunami survivor from india. it is very costly and i think that is a barrier. It shouldn't be affordable only for the wealthy. another comment--it is much easier to love one that looks like us. don't you agree?
