It means to be respectful of others, including other sexes, races, religions, disabilities, and cultures. In principal, it is a good thing. It means that people should be free to work and live in environments that are respected. Things like telling a racial joke, not providing access to the disabled, or laughing at someone because they are short is just wrong. I am married to someone who is a minorty, and we often see subtle and not so subtle disrespect aimed toward her just because of her race.

It is true it can be taken too far, especially when it comes to language (I don't see how calling someone 'vertically challenged' is less offensive than 'short'). But, that is really only a small part of what it is all about.

It is interesting that most people who complain about PC are largely white and christian, and so have never been in a situation where they were discriminated against.

Politically correct, to me, means ensuring that there can never be anything spoken that anyone can potentially take offense to. Good thing? NO WAY. There is no way this can happen. People have been and will continue to take offense to whatever they see as offensible, and there's nothing we can do to prevent it. Political correctness has gotten way out of control and it's stifling free speech. It's continually undermined when black people call each other the 'n-word', when sports teams' names are revoked because a minority of the ethnic population in question objects, and when we are all just too d*mn sensitive!

Teaching ppl to be sensitive to others is a healthy thing.

Using terminology that is of a negative tone is detrimental. For example, I can't stand to hear the phrase, "runs like a girl." unless it is actually about someone running I guess. But most of the time it is referring to running away like a coward. That always ticks me off when I believe women have more courage than men when it comes for standing up and fighting for what we believe in at all cost.

With all that said though, it can be taken to the extreme. And I have no clue what has happen to the phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me."

That teaches us to let negative things bounce off us and that we choose to let somebody's elses opinion of us hurt us or not. We seem to have lost that mentality.

Its the proper way of stating something without offending anyone. That is the way I think of it. I think it is stupid and a bad thing. Like if someone is short, the politically correct thing to say is that they are vertically challenged. I say just call them short!

What is Political correctness ? Name one politician who has ever been correct about anything. I guess if lying, stealing , cheating, adultery , etc. are politically correct, then this World is in DEEP Trouble.

I call it being polite.

And that's a fine thing anywhere.

In fact, I find it ironic that in one breath people complain that kids these days just don't respect others, and in the next these same people will complain about how they can't use their favorite ethnic jokes at the office anymore because of this darned PC stuff.

Trying to be respectful of others is a good thing, and I'm happy to see it wherever it happens.

PC is the epitome of pipe dreams and marshmallow couches. the facts are people believe different things and when you try to limit one group to appease another you are violating one group to not violate another. It makes no sense. The cover up of reality is what has caused the effects of not being able to discern what other people think and believe and their efforts to rid the world of certain groups of people. Sugar coating doesn't fix the problems.

It can be either way. It's original use was to avoid using insulting terms, such as beaner and coon, to refer to people of other races, or to anyway, consider it wrong. Today, it's use is pretty much to offend noone by offending everyone, such as the whole "Happy Holidays" thing.

It's censorship:

People are offended for no reason but claim to be it ruins peoples careers and marriages. It also allows lower class people to punish people who have worked all their lifes by simply being offended. It is a lot like communism everyone most suffer equally or people are offended.
