A rancher wants to build a fence for a square lot with dimensions of 50yd by 50yd. He wants to install a fence post every 5yd. How many fence post will he need?


i put 50 fence posts, is that right or wrong and if its wrong what is the right answer?

Ya but dont u have to sare a post on each corner? sooooo that would be 36 right?

I'm afraid the previous answers got this one wrong.

You DO need 10 posts per side. That's right. But the corner posts do double duty. Each corner post counts as one of the ten in both sides.

The correct answer is 36 posts are needed.

Actually the answer is 36. 10 each on two sides and 8 each on the other two sides.

How about 40? One on the 5 yard mark, then 10, then 15, etc, up to 50. That is 10. The next one you place is around the corner at the next 5 yard mark (0 is already marked by the 50 from the previous side) - so 10 on each side. If you want to think of it the way some people are answering, do 11 per side, but corners do double duty - so 44-4, which is 40.

Another way to look at this is to say that he needs 4 x 50 yards of fence. That's 200 yards. If you put a post every 5 yards, that's 200 / 5 = 40. (Keeping in mind that you don't need a post at the beginning of the fence because it'll attach to the last post on the other end.)

50/5 =10 X 4 = 40 - 4 shared = 36 posts

The perimeter is equal to 200 yards

There are four sides. Each side is equal to 50 yards

50 x 4 = 200 yards

The fence are spaced every five yards

Divide 200 yards by 5 yards

200 / 5 = 40

40 fence posts is required to complete the perimeter.

The answer is 40

You only need 40 posts

youve got to work out the perimetre (which is (the distance around the square, i.e.50 + 50 + 50+ 50 + 50 = 200)

and then u've just got to divide 200 by 5 (thats the distance between each post) and that gives you 40!

Since it's a 50y by 50y square the perimeter will be 200y. (50+50+50+50) Since every 5 yards has a post divide 200/5 to get 40 posts.

if it is 5 feet gap then 10 one each side not counting 1st . But does not matter this adds up from previous one so 40
