I have to write a paper for my lit class and im having trouble coming up with exactly what the question is trying to ask. So i would appreciate the help if anybody can help me decipher it & provide an answer. How is the metamorphosis a book that grapples with the human spirit in adversity?

in the beginning the character is liked by his family, by the end he's an embarrassment and a burden and they pretty much hate him. Then he dies alone. I think you can find a lot on how the family members' spirit changes to how the son's spirit changes and how he percieves his family throughout the story

The story is a metaphor for a person who becomes seriously ill, is sick and disabled for a long time, and finally dies. The family and other characters react in different ways to the situation.

I think you'll find it easier to understand the question when you've read the book.
