Good grief, you people know nothing and still offer 'advice'.
It depends on what you do, for some professions it is easier than for others. There are special visa pools for technology workers, nurses, DoD workers and a few others.
You need a company that will sponsor you. They need to show that there isn't a suitable candidate in the US already. Companies are supposed to advertise the job and get no suitable applicants. That will get you an H1-B which is a 3 year non-resident alien visa.
Another possibility is to work in the UK for an American company and then transfer. I think that's a L-1A for a manager of L-1B for a specialist worker (L-2 for family).
The H-1 and L-1 visas are the next best thing to endentured servitude, the companies use them to keep people on low pay because if you leave the company then you have to leave the country too. They used to only give you two weeks to pack your sh1t and get out of Dodge. It's tough living in fear of your management taking a dislike to you and having you deported.
After you have got into the country you can start trying to get permanent residence, to do that you need to get a resident visa which is then changed into a green card by 'adjustment of status'. For that the company has to prove that you are still the only person that wants the job (labor certification) and then you have to prove that your qualifications are adequate and that you are in good health. When all that is done there's the endless waiting. I got here in 1998 and got my green card in 2004. So I can be a citizen in 2009! The UK and Canada are way more honest in how they treat immigrants.
Another way is to buy a business that employs something like ten people and invest a million dollars.
You can also move to Canada, become a citizen (two years instead of ten) and then work in the US on the NAFTA scheme, but you still need to find a sponsoring company.
Or you could marry an American or someone else who also has full residence here.
