This morning my car wouldn't start. I turned the ignition and nothing happened. The starter didn't turn over...nothing. All of the lights worked. I tried a few more times and then it started.

Could this be a problem with my starter, a failing battery, ignition or something else?

I assumed that a starter just all of a sudden went out without any signs.

This car is a '98 with 103k miles.

Thanks,

Scott.....

Check the battery cables for corrosion. Also the selanoid could be failing. A sure test of that, when your car is not starting, (a very inexpensive part located generally on the wheel well), is to bypass the selanoid with jumper cables and go from the battery to the starter. If it starts then it is bad. But start with an elimination process of checking the battery cables first. They also could be loose and not making proper connection. Clean and tighten, in that case. Happy starting!

The same thing happened to me once. It was the starter. Usually starters are easy repairs, the hard part is getting the car to a mechanic or a place you can do it yourself. If your lights worked, your battery is fine. I would start with replacing the starter. With over 100 k miles, your car's starter has seen a lot of action and is probably the factory original. That's where I would start.

if its a standard the clutch interlock switch may have quit if it has one,if its an auto is it all the way into park or try starting it in nuetral, maybe that switch quit, the starter solenoid may have quit as well,is it cold there , maybe the starter got wet and now is frozen,if you turn on the lights and try starting do they stay bright or go dim.lots of different things it could be,good luck

hi,,i own a repair shop, and if it was real cold it might have temporarily gotten froze in the solenoid switch, that can cause this to happen, but since it did start id say you may have an ignition switch going bad on it,, id wait before i replaced it though,,because it may never do it again on you,but id it does id start with the switch, and go from there,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

could be starter. could ber solenoid. could be relays. could be connections.could be battery is not able to start car if too cold outside--are lites dim when they come on? could also be alternator.

try jumping your starter with a rubber handled screwdriver--if no results, call a tow truk and go to your favorite repair shop.

also try your battery connections before you call the tow.saves embarrassment, on occasion
