It depends on what type of performance you want. If you just want to do Microsoft Word and/or surf the web, 256 MB RAM should be fine. But if you want to play games that require speed, you would need 512 MB RAM. Unless you want to go into really advanced gaming or editing programs, you would then need
1 GB RAM. With that make sure the computer has a good Graphics Card as well as a good Processor running at about 3.00 Ghrz.
Hope i didn't confuse you to much.

For running Windows XP, 512MB is a good place to start. If you're going to run Vista, probably more.
You might also look at an Apple MacBook. You get a lot of useful software with it right out of the box, and now with a program, Parallels, you can run about any variety of Windows at the same time. That's what I'm doing. At least 1GB is advisable.

Windows XP Home can only use 2 gigs and XP Pro 4; so more than that is a waste of money.
1 gig minimum, 2 if you can afford it.

If you get one of those light, agile ones you can sit on your lap with all the additional extras, then a good hard drive is essential to help with the processing speeds.

If you mean a laptop computer, 512MB
is minimum for fast, efficient operation.
Depending on what you'll use it for, you may
need 1G and / or a graphics card with its own RAM.

I'd say about 6 or 7 Gig - depending on how much you want to store on it and how much you want it to be able to do (ie, are you just going to be typing stuff and going on the web, or are you going to be using lots of bandwidth for music and storing videos, photos etc).
