I purchased a guatemalan quilt and want to set the colors so that they don't run. any suggestions?

You need to use a dye fixative such as Retayne. Check the link below for details on fixatives. Retayne is inexpensive - about $2.00 for a 4 ounce bottle. Salt water does not set dye - it causes the dye to be attracted to the fabric instead of the water, but the next time you wash it, unless there's salt in the water again, the dye will run. Also, salt water does not have any effect on dyes in synthetic fabrics because they use different kinds of dyes. (Your quilt is probably natural fabrics though).

Salt water will set colors. Add about a cup of salt to cold water and soak about an hour.
