Chances are that your 6 year old will not be able to volunteer at a business. There would be a possibility of legal problems due to child labor laws. And some of the things that go on at shelters/medical places could be stressful for someone so long.
I suggest that you look around your neighborhood. If you go to a church or are involved in any other community activities, they may be able to point you in the right direction. Perhaps if there is an elderly person around, they could appreciate him coming over to help feed, play with, and groom their pets. Your child may also be able to help out with some other simple chores. (bringing in groceries, reaching things that have rolled under the bed, etc...)
Just remember that kids that young could easily be influenced or overpowered by the wrong adults. So supervise and maybe even help with this volunteer time. Perhaps you could sit and have a cup of coffe with someone while y'all watch your kid and their dog run around the back yard.
That's great if your child wants to volunteer and wonderful that you are encouraging it :) Just remember to keep this a positive experience that everyone (including the child) will enjoy. Volunteering needs to be seen as an honor, not as a chore or a punishment.

A children's hospital, an animal shelter, a convelesant home. Also, remember people are in hospitals during the holidays too, when I was in h.s. years ago, we carolled at the local hospital.
Make sure you teach your children to wash their hands and not touch their eyes or mouth after being in those places. It is great to volunteer there but just take the logical precautions so they kids don't bring in something or carry out anything either.

Most nursing homes would love for you and your son to come and chat with the elderly and most humane socities have volunteers to walk the dogs and pet the cats. Most Hospitals never turn away volunteers to read to or spend time with their patients.

Nursing Homes love to have children visit...especially during the holidays. They can read to patients who are there or be read to, color with them, make art projects. Many of these people have no family to visit them on a regular basis. Your child can learn from them and they from your child, as well.
