Not safe and when one is seen doing it, people call the police to report it. Might be a way of trying to hijack people. South Africa

In England no not really too dangerous, you could be getting into the car with anybody. Drivers are reluctant to pick up hitchhikers for the same reason. You could end up being robbed, mugged, attacked.

It once was, but the popularity of roadside stranglers has hindered hitchhiking somewhat.

it is more a question of whether it is safe than popular.... most people are so afraid of trouble or potential lawsuits
