How can people be discouraged from carrying knives?

I live near the spot where a teenage schoolboy was killed by another teenage schoolboy using a knife he was carrying. Many students at the school still carry knives, although they are searched. Do you have any insight into how the practice of carrying a knife as a weapon can be discouraged. This is a serious question to which we in this community would like help in developing answer

Its mostly the younger people who carry knives,
Whether its bad perenting,lack of respect or the dog eat dog attitude something has to change.

Personally at 16 i would bring back national service and teach these kids manners,respect and some self worth. A kick up ar se never hurt anyone this is what they need.

Any person carrying what is obviously a weapon should receive a minimum sentence of five years.
There is absolutely no excuse for carrying a knife or any other weapon apart from to use it to hurt someone or kill someone so you would be going equiped to cause bodily harm

Get the courts to stop mamby pambying the little ba*tards and give them sterner punishment if they use or carry any kind of weapon, give the police more powers of search, and also bring back corporal punishment in schools.

very difficult.....i went to a high school that was borderline dangerous and some kids.....not all...felt like they needed to carry knives in order to protect themselves........The kids need to feel a real sense of safety......before that can happen......It is up to the adults in the community to get their hands dirty and clean up the community and make it safe for the kids.....

You can't. Many knives are used as tools; if the person is creative enough, ANYTHING could be used as a weapon

I would say by letting them carry a handgun but I suppose freedom and rights don't mean much now days.
