Grammatically, it is diminutive form of 'dear'. So the way some people call you 'dear', some call you 'darling', if they find you more endearing and adorable than whom they would call merely 'dear'.
It is also used by people to address others whose names they don't bother to remember, nevertheless like to show intimacy:-)

the word darling means to me like it could mean like you are adored by a guy and he calls you darling or your mom came up w/ some pet name for you
