There are actually around 7 moons (or "near-Earth asteroids) of the Earth, many of them being so small that they are not very important. The moon that everyone knows about is a large mass of rock orbiting the Earth with a period (time to orbit right round the Earth) of roughly 28 Earth days. The moons are also classified as "satellites" because the definition of a satellite is something that orbits another thing.
