In what ways does poetry impact society today and what are the major roles it plays (other than in school)? I am not talking about music lyrics, but rather published poetry.

Poetry plays an enormously important role in giving freedom of expression to those who are on the fringes of society. Not only can anyone chose to write poetry, you don't even have to be that good to get published. That sounds like I'm dissing poets, I'm not, it's just that there is a lot of very bad poetry that doesn't deserve the name being pedalled by publishers. Purple Ronnie, for example, is all a lot of people expect of poetry. I feel, as a friend to a number of real poets, people who don't just write down stuff that rhymes but craft ideas from their very souls, that poetry should play a bigger part in peoples lives so that people can start to see the difference between simple verse and poetic art.

Poetry, like music, dance etc. is an art and it needs to be revered as such again, rather than popularised and printed on cards in the same way that Monet has been.
