Becuase they release the DSLite now, and that is the primary version of the DS. You can still buy one used, Look at Ebay, There are sure to be some Bundles on their now that new consoles have come out and people are looking for holiday money.
I would like for Nintendo to continue production of the Original DS, but it is not likely that they will.

I guess Nintendo doesn't want to make the more durable (but not so bright) original Nintendo DS. You could still get a lite, or get a used Nintendo DS, and buy Nintendogs: Labrador separately
