I personally struggle with reading maps, but I have many friends - who are also women - that are incredible with maps. I guess being "directionally challenged" runs in my family - hee hee! I always tend to use landmarks when driving around rather than streets...they just seem easier to remember. I can never trust my "direction instincts" either. When I feel VERY STRONGLY that the correct way to go is LEFT, it is almost always RIGHT. Other times when I am not sure if I have missed a turn, I will go just about as far as I feel is safe and then U-Turn so that I don't waste too much time...and then, guess what? I would have found the turn if I had driven just a half-mile further or so. Argh.
