How is he with phonics? Was he taught phonics in school? Some schools place less emphasis on it. Also, it is an idea to make spelling fun or into a game for him. I have included some resources for you.

Try playing games with him such as Boggle or Scrabble. This will help him learn to spell better and you all can have fun together. He won't realize that he is learning to spell better but that he is having fun trying to beat you at a game. That is something all kids love to do -- beat their parents at something.

However, when you play don't criticize him on his spelling. If he spells a word wrong do the challenge part. Tell him that he has to prove to you that the word is correct by looking it up in the dictionary. Then tell him he can always challenge your words, which is fun especially if you accidentally on purpose spell a word wrong and then you have to pick your tiles up.

It will be a great fun learning experience for your whole family.

My son gets bored will spelling. Get a cookie sheet and put a layer of salt in it. Let your son practice spelling the words with his finger in the salt. Tell him to spell out loud as he does this. I hope this will help improve his spelling.

1-make letter cards....the exact amount needed for the particular words being studied. Lay them out on the floor and have your son pick the cards out needed to spell the word.

2-make up little rhymes or clues for spelling words....ie: for near...I whisper NEAR your EAR. For Hurl....U don't want to HURL.

3-Quiz them daily, without warning, then use above techniques plus writing words out. Focus on one word at a time.

play spelling games with him. this will help improve his spelling in an interactive way, at the same time avoiding the monotone of memorising.

he should also read more proper prose, which will help improve his general language ability. avoid books such as comics with no literary value.
