I'm not certain...but in one episode (the one where Lisa was sponsoring a boy n brazil and they went to find him)...he asked and Lisa's response was, "yeah, it's a mystery all right...but if you look at the clues you can figure it out." There is mention of Walt Whitman's gravestone in the episode where homers mother returns and He is burried in New Jersey, which certainly seems to have all the requirements to be where it is located...including a city called Springfield...and since so few people seem to remember the capitol of the State calling the capitol city Capitol city fits right in with that....I vote of New Jersey....but that's just MY theory...

In one of the simpsons episodes, A movie company wanted to create a film in a small town with charm. I think it was something about "Radioactive Man" etc.
Anyway.. while the writers were thumbing though a newspaper they noticed a small ad. something like "Film Springfield"
They grab a map, and as far as I can tell they pointed to the middle of the United States.. and thats as close as I can get to an exact location.

The idea is that they could live anywhere, etc. On a few different occasions the Simpson's have shown a Map and they were definitely in the midwest area. There is no specific though, so you can always feel they live as close or as far away from you as makes you comfortable.

If I am not mistaken in the episode that resembles VH1's Behind The Music at the end the narrator says they are just a normal Kentucky family, but I would have to re-watch the episode to be sure. Be on the lookout for that episode.
Actually I just checked, and it say Northern Kentucky family.

I'd have to say that the writers keep it ambiguous intentionally. There are over 30 states with a "Springfield", and Matt Groening picked it for that reason.

I don't think they will ever tell. The writers picked Springfield because just about every state has one.
