Or have we placed too much value on pre school in a time when children should be at home playing?

Having experience in the educational field, here is what is happening. Children today need to be exposed to early education through home schooling or pre-school before the age of five. If they go in "cold" into a kindergarten environment, they are going to be behind in learning. Most kindergarten classes expect the child to have learned their ABC's, count, print their name, know how to read, things that were typically learned in kindergarten are no longer the norm. By the time a child reaches five, they already know and are very savy on computers. Our society has become advanced in technology and our schools are trying to keep up the pace of that growth. No longer are children learning division and multiplication in forth and fifth grade, they learn it earlier and the school systems strive to keep up the pace in the math and science for our young.

I think that pre-school is a good thing. But, I don't think it is a necessary thing. If the parents both have to work, the child has to be somewhere anyway. Therefore, I think that it is good to be learning something while you are away from your parental units.
