I dont mean no ofense, Im from mexico and its confusing how in tv n movies u see african-americans calling themselves this almost in terms of endearment and then someone non african-american uses it and its total mayhem, Please help me understand!!!!

Honestly, I don't blame you for being confused. I'm a black American and I'm confused too, because there is a double standard for non blacks who use the word. I'm guilty of using the word myself, but when I do use it, it's for the meaning that was originally intended. I wonder if other ethnic groups use such derogatory slang amongst themselves as a term of endearment? If they don't then I can't figure out why us black people (American and otherwise) feel we need to use it as a friendly term.

***** is a black person, but N***** is a totally different word and totally different meaning. A n***** is a low down and dirty person. Knowing that, anyone can be one no matter their race or color. Although it is used as slang for a black person it isn't the true meaning.

It is different when a dark skin person says it to another dark skin person. If i had blond hair and i said someone else was dumb because they have blonde hair it doesn't work cuz i am calling myself dumb too. When someone with light skin says it since they have light skin it does not work the same way it is meant as offensive, like calling someone dirty.but when a dark skin person says it they are calling themselves that too and i think that may be why the don't get mad I don't get it why a dark skin person would want to call themselves that though, it seems racist no matter what color you are, it does not seem right to still have barriers on skin color=( People should not have to base what they say on what color skin the person they are talking to has.

It's hard to fully explain. Just know this: if you're a non-black, don't EVER use it. Don't test the waters.

It is slang for *****. In the southern US, it is used to describe someone who is lazy, trashy, nasty and dishonest. My grandma used to say she doesn't like *****rs, white or black. Yet, throughout southern history, it has only been used to describe blacks.
No one but blacks can use it because of how it has been used in the past-- as a racist remark.
