There are many theories on the subject. As usual, it was a combination of factors. A very important important one was a major rural exodus. The Roman Empire was stretched out too far and wide, all the resources to support the extravagant lifestyle of the cities had to come from the countryside. So, as the lives of the people cultivating the land became harder and the pressures on the land became stronger, peasants left the country to the city, where life was more promising. The "panem et circensis" (I think that is how you spell it) or "bread and circus" mentality promoted by the government tried distracted the people from poverty and other problems. People from all over the Empire were doing the same. Slowly, the resources dwindled and the countryside could no longer provide the bread to feed the cities. At the same time, mounting pressures came from all sides as the "barbarians" or foreigners were knocking on the gates of the empire.
I don't remember exactly, but you should be able to find some sort of summary online.
Hope that helps.

This is in very simplistic terms by the way.
The main points for the decline and fallof thr Roman Empire were;
1. bad emperors
2. increasing civilization of the people of the empire (which means weaker soldiers)
3. Roman disunity, endless infighting
4. economic decline
5. plagues
6. mass migration
7. and the settlement of the Visigoths in Moesia

The same thing that brings down most empires. Arrogance, degenerate behavior, and citizens too lazy to do their own manual labor.
