I do the right thing? I don't know why I feel so guilty, since theres a bunch of people there that complain and don't appreciate what all I do anyway.

If you are able to go in on a day off without interfering in personal plans, it is good to do only if it is not a constant thing. If you have plans that could/should not be broken you should not feel guilty.

If you had plans then why feel guilty? You said that people don't appreciate what you do but obviously your boss thinks you are dependable and he may appreciate it though he may not say it. If your boss was not in the habit of asking you all the time to come in on your day off and your plans were not that important then I would have gone in if I was you. If your boss is in the habit of asking you all the time then no, don't feel guilty. You had plans.

Don't worry about what a "bunch or people" appreciate or not. If by that you mean co-workers, then their opinion will not affect your career directly. If it was a scheduled day off, legally, there is nothing he can do to make you cancel your plans and go to work. The most he can do is guilt trip you, but other than that, he's powerless. The only thing to gain from canceling your day off, is the fact that if he knows you will be available, he will call you to work whenever he needs someone, not you especifically.
So enjoy your day off and get caller I.D. in the near future.

This happened to me on one of my vacations. When I got back into town, I got a call from my boss that they had laid a bunch of people off, and could I come in? I ended up going in because my co-worker at the time was worthless..hense why she got laid off.

You did do the right thing. I am in a similar situation & they do the same thing to me when I am off! Don't worry about it! You will get used to it after a while & stop answering the calls from your boss when your'e off!

wierldly enough, last night i was at work and when the boss came in one of the cashiers told him that she had to go to the doctor today and couldnt work, so he told the other cashier that was there and was suppose to be off today that she would have to come in and work tonight, she told him she couldnt that she had plans...so my boss says well i have you here to work for me if you cant work when i need you then im going to have to find someone else to replace you....i think it was more of a scare tactic than anything, because if you are scheduled off i dont think they can force you to work, but keep in mine they can make you miserable to the point where you quit

It depends. What were your plans? Anything that could have been postponed to another day? I feel the same way you do. I hate turning them down, even if I think what I'm doing that day is important.

Well, it all depends on what you do for a living if you should feel guilty or not. If it is a job where the workforce is needed then you should have come in.

Good for you. Don't let anyone make you feel guilty for simply having a life.
