It's all depend on the boss.
if i like him, which is most unlikely, then may be i ll come, and also on the condition that it's ok with my family members.
If i don't, which mostly is the case these days, then absolutely i have another plans that i can't cancel. i m sorry. or "you should ve told me beforehand". "i m very tired and have to go to a doctor". etc...

No, not at all. Last week I was on vacation and it just happened that a very important mandatory meeting fell on one of my vacation days and my employer actually thought that i would take my time to come to the meeting.....NOT!

That depends if you really have plans. I would have to weigh if I am getting paid extra then it might be to my benefit. If he isn't in the habit of doing it then I would be considerate of him because he may be in dire straights and you are in a position to be of help and especially if you have a good relationship with him/her.
