Each girl is different so I suggest that you get to know her interests first. You wouldn't take a girl to watch a concert of a band that she doesn't even like would you? In general though, a place where you can both have fun and break the ice would be just fine. Afterwards, you can take her away from the crowd to a place where you can just talk, talk and talk. By that time, you'd have mellowed down and gotten rid of those first date jitters. good luck!

Here's a really radical idea why don't you ask her where she would like to go, if she then says it's up to you perhaps you could take her to a public place to make her feel more comfortable (that's if you hardly know her) such as to see the Christmas lights in your local town and then to a Christmas funfair, you could have loads of fun on the rides and then maybe you could take her to your local (not trashy) pub or wine bar.

Somewhere you both feel comfortable.
A first date can be a stressful thing, both of you trying to impress the other, and if you are not at ease with your surroundings, things can get complicated.
Ask your date where she would like to go, then suggest what you would prefer, and come to a mutual agreement.
You need to be relaxed, so you can convey your true feelings.
Everybody is different, so do your own thing, but do it together.

I've got to say, Charlies answer is a good one. Movies are out - not enough communication. No fancy restaraunts because some girls are shy about eating in front of a guy. But miniature golf can be fun, and you can wrap your arms around her to show her proper putting moves.

A taco stand and a cheap motel is one way to go. The worst that can happen is she won't go out with you again, and there's always the chance the evening will be both inexpensive and rewarding.

Take her to a gay bar.
With all the attention you get from the men, she'll know you're good looking.
And noone will be 'eyeing' her up.

Ice skating (if the date is soon) - very romantic and it'll give you the chance to hold her hand. Hope it goes well.
