Yes you can do all these and it is also very cool! The only problem is computer games, there are not so many like there are for pc.

Macs are good, but they are a little costly for what you want to do.
You will be better off with a PC for what you're planning on using it for. DO NOT GET A DELL, they have the highest number of complaints in the market (17.9% of the market share last time i knew). For playing DVD's, music, and even some games, a HP would fit the profile. HP's have a nice feature that allows you to play a DVD without booting into the OS (less power is used, longer battery usage). Some of the models that HP have been putting out are focused towards music and movies. Look here for the models that you would be looking for http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/series_can.do;jsessionid=FtbVnxgtYCiVUWSns2VnDV5gyFaXWlof1zRove14L2yPgeSUg0AL!-572348709?storeName=computer_store&landing=notebooks&a1=Usage&v1=Entertainment
What hardware you choose all depends on what exactly you want to do with it. If you plan on using some demanding programs, I would recommend a dual core processor (Core 2 Duo or Core Duo), at least 1 GB of RAM, and a minimum of 80 GB hard drive. If you have a lot of music and movies that you save to your hard drive, you may want to get a 120 GB hard drive.
If you can tell me what you plan on doing with the computer I can recommend a configuration that would fit your needs. Let me know.

There isn't a thing you can't do on a Macintosh. Trust me, I switched two years ago, and I have yet to find anything that my Mac won't do. A MacBook would be perfect for college. Macs come with great software for entertainment. iLife '06 will make managing music, photos and videos an absolute breeze. If you have any questions about Mac, just send me a message. I could spend all day telling you about the good things Mac has to offer.

I never really tried Mac. I just saw it at Best Buy and i do not like it. It is ok for entertainment tasks. But i reccomend Windows XP Home Edition for schooling and entertainments tasks. Dell is a laptop model i think you will be satisfied with.

you may want to consider looking at a PC format instaed of a mac. mac's are good machimes but there isnt alot of software for them. I have a mac laptop...it is in the closet in its bag....where its been for over a year. also if you need repairs it will not be as easy as a pc....lots of computer repair shops do not do mac (I know, I own a computer repair shop and I do not do mac's!) check out these laptops on tigerdirect http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?Lprice=200&Hprice=499.99&CatId=17 I hope I helped answer your question.

If you're not doing anything specific ie just word processing, dvds and music, general ones will be fine.
haven't used mac but i heard its GOOOD!!!
if you're doing a course that requires some specific software needs faster processors and might be more convenient to use windows for that. so it kind of depends on what you're doing with it...

Dell is the best and chapest. I got my laptop for about $800.00 new. 521.00 Pounds.
If you get a laptop then you will need a couple of other bits [like 30bucks] cos it's hard to type on a laptop. You'll need a new keyboard and mouse and a connecter.
