I am a mom to 4 kids, ages 27, 25, 22, and 9. I also have been a licensed home child care provider for 20 years. Your little one is still learning and he will get better with the self-feeding and drinking from a cup as he gets older and has more practice. Many little ones are not aware that there is something to drink from a sippy cup as the sucking required from the spout is different than what they have been used to from breast or bottle. Try another type of cup or use a cup with a built in straw in the lid. Be patient with him. He will not be able to use a spoon or a fork on his own for some time so offer him finger foods (Cheerios, small bites of banana, steamed carrots cut into pieces, baked sweet potato cut into pieces, toast, etc.) He will begin to understand the word "No" soon enough, but he will test it to make sure you mean business. He will need your hands-on guidance for several more years to fully understand and obey when he is told no. For example, he always goes to the dog dish and tries to eat the dog food. You can not just tell him "no". You must go to him, remove him physically from the dog dish (putting it out of his reach if you have to) and take him to the other room to play with something acceptable. This is called "distracting" and works best for little ones. It is never too late to begin reading to your children. He will not sit still for a long book so get him some board books with simple pictures, but no real story to them for starters. Look at the pictures and just talk about them. "Look, there is a doggie. The doggie says 'woof'." Another fun thing for little ones is to take pictures of things he knows and make his own book out of them. It can be as simple as a picture of his dad glued to a piece of paper with the word "daddy" underneath, a picture of your house with "my house" printed underneath, etc.. Lamenate or cover the pages with clear contact paper to make them durable. Children your son's age love to tear paper, it is fun and makes a nice sound. Even if he sits and looks at a picture book with you for 20 seconds and wants to get down, that is good for a beginning. As you make reading a part of our daily routine, he will begin to look forward to that special time with you. Bed-time is a good reading time, too.

Of course he can't self feed, drink properly, or sit and listen to a book. He's just a baby. Buy him some baby books that he can play with and look at. He will learn to eat, drink, and listen more as he get a little older. There is nothing wrong with him.

my daughter is 21 months and still cannot self feed (she usually just likes to sling the food around with the spoon but she can eat solid foods ) and has never used a sippy cup...i had to start giving her a cup with a straw and uses that like a pro

he's fine, don't worry about milestones - they exist just to worry you. You'll read him book when he's ready (and he will, eventually, even if it might take long time). He doesn't understand NO?? Ha ha, propably does, but doesn't care about it. If he seems healthy to you - don't worry. And be glad he's active, my kids are to and it took my daughter very long before she started talking, now she's 3 and cant do coloring books, but physically she's more advanced then her peers.

no its definitely not too late...keep encouraging your baby with both the books and the meaning of the word "NO". he's bound to catch on, some babies just take a while longer. good luck!!
