Anything other than a DELL. Dell are crap and I've repaired two of them in the past week that had major issues. Try looking for an AMD processor in the computer. They usually run cheaper. You can compare prices from Walmart and BestBuy. You can always search for a computer show that visits your area and purchase one there.

Toshiba laptops are affordable and of really good quality.
Check your local shops for a toshiba in that price range.

unlike response #1, I would go straight to dell. I like them, they have worked better for me than any others. I would avoid compaq and gateway like the plague. But that's just me.
