My doctor was not against the patch when I first became pregnant. His attitude was that having the patch was better than smoking because I was removing everything but the nicotine from my system... The patch is only temporary. The only thing I can suggest that could be the reason your doctor doesn't want you to use the patch is because the nicotine will be delivered in a continuous stream instead of in short intervals. If you're down to 2 or 3 cigarettes a day, though, it might not be all that difficult to quit cold turkey. It only takes about a week for the nicotine to be completely out of your system, and if you can develop some healthy habits while your pregnant to make up for the cigarette you would normally have, you should be able to beat it. Use your baby as motivation, after all, that's why you're trying to quit now anyway.

I can... I can recommend this. Start with your usueual and start first thing in the morning. Smoke what you would normally smoke for one day. Then every week you cut back. It is like using the pack, but this way you are using what your body is used to. You have to set a plan in motion and STICK TO IT.. Remember, the below looks simple, but trust me, its tough too. Just dont get off track and if you do, thats ok, pick up where you left off, dont smoke full blown again, just continue down your road to success!
Just an example here: Lets say you smoked one pack a day. There are 20 cigs in a pack. Do this.
20 cigs a day is what you normally smoke.
Nov 30th- You smoke 19 cigs a day.
Dec 6th- You reduce to 18 cigs a day
Dec 13th- You reduce to 17 cigs a day
Dec 20th- You reduce to 16 cigs a day
Dec 27th- You reduce to 15 cigs a day
Jan 3rd- You reduce to 14 cigs a day
Jan 10th- You reduce to 13 cigs a day
Jan 17th- You reduce to 12 cigs a day
Jan 24th- You reduce to 11 cigs a day
Jan 31st- You reduce to 10 cigs a day
Feb 7th- Reduce to 9 a day
Feb 14th- Reduce to 8 a day
Feb 21st- Reduce to 7 a day
Feb 28th- Reduce to 6 a day
Mar 7th- Reduce to 5 a day
Mar 14th- Reduce to 4 a day
Mar 21st- Reduce to 3 a day
Mar 28th- Reduce to 2 a day
Ap 4th- Reduce to 1 a day
April 11th 2007 You are smoke free
You see, you are doing the same thing that the patch will do. The only difference here is the fact that your not spending the money that you would on the patches. Your body will not go into shock this way by!!!!!!! You are winging yourself off the smokes for good! Your body will be used to having not much nic in it and it will make your quit day a better day. Believe me, I have tried it all and this is the ONLY thing that ever worked for me.
Also, I might add that God can help too, just say a pray and he will help you.
Then quit smoking support people on the internet for your quit day. They will help you set up your quit day and prefer it to be an extended period so you can prepare your mind, body and spirit for that day.
Nic only stays in your system for 3 days after you quit. When you pass that 30 day mark, it becomes so much easier. Remember, you are doing this for yourself, not for others. As long as that is truth, you will succeed!! I am so proud of you! Go FOR IT!!!

I quit when I had my wisdom teeth removed. Almost a month ago! I guess I can't really recommend that (though being asleep for four days really helps you quit!)
-Set a date to quit
-Do something different that day - vacation, a hike/camping, drive somewhere, etc.
-Start working out when you quit.
-Keep a positive mindset (even if you're pretending)
I smoked a pack a day for 5+ years and now I'm just dealing with the habit of "...I used to smoke when I did this" and etc. You have to make yourself think, "I don't want a cigarrette". Every time you walk down the street, every time you sit at a bar, etc., just think about how you don't want one, because you don't want to have to break that addiction again.
Sorry for rambling.
Good luck!!

If you have not fully committed yourself to quit then the odds are you will not be able to. Don't quit for someone else make sure you are quitting for yourself! Chew gum, hard candy anything to help with the nicotine cravings. Find something to do with your hands. Part of the comfort of smoking is having something in your hand. If you have a craving grab a pen, pencil or straw to hold just like you would a cigarette. Good luck!

Ask your health care provider for a prescription called Chantrix. I prescribed it to a woman who smoked 2 packs a day for 40 years and she was able to quit without the awful cravings she usually experienced. The only downside is the cost, but how much do you spend on smokes? In addition, the longer you smoke, the more health problems you will incur.

I'm normally not one for self-help books but I've heard wonderful things about a book by Alan Carr called "The EASYWAY to Stop Smoking." I've just started reading it so I can't tell you how effective it is personally but it has gotten rave reviews from smokers (or ex-smokers now). Maybe worth a try. If a fifteen dollar book can help you stop smoking than I'd say its well worth it.
