To add real value to your house there is honestly no "cheap" way to go about it. In terms of maximum profit though, gardens and landcaping are good.

First impressions are everything, even when it comes to a home. This is why "curb appeal" is so important. Does the home seem inviting from the outside? If not, it's going to be difficult to get people to look at the INSIDE. 1. Shutters are inexpensive, but can create a lovely contrast and drastically enhance the 'newness' factor. 2. Improved landscaping is typically very affordable and can again create a dramtically improved curb appeal. Add some colorful flowers, make sure grass is in good condition, etc. New home buyers do NOT want the added headache of having to buy a new home and immediately start shelling out $ to improve it. 3. Paint is the most inexpensive yet drastic way to increase value. It can make a home look much newer and cleaner. 4. Carpeting. Even if it's low-grade. People can not envision letting their children play on dirty carpeting. 5. As others stated, cabinets are important. Typically, you won't need to replace the entire cabinet. Inquire about simply having them refaced to save expenses. Additionally, it is a proven fact that the woman has the ultimate say-so on whether or not a couple purchases a home. What would your wife look for in a new home? Likely the kitchen is always the first area of concentration. A new stove, (as cheap as $300) a dishwasher, ($250) a refrigerator, ($800 - ?) can SIGNFICANTLY increase desirability to a potential buyer. Hope that helps!

You can re-do the flooring in the kitchens or bathrooms, or re-carpet one or two of the rooms (probably living room or other main common room). You can also paint one or two of the rooms if you don't want to pay for repainting the whole house. Do you have kids? Adding a small concrete pad and a basketball hoop can increase value, as can a well-maintained swing set in the backyard (both could be done cheaply if you are willing to do the work yourself). Gardening is always good but real landscaping is better; the downside is that you have to maintain it. The real question is, why are you asking? If you want the house to look good when you sell it, so that you can get more money, then some of these might work. If you just want the value to be higher in the abstract, it's less relevant, the overall trends in the housing market matter more.

Landscaping or any exterior addition (pools, workshops, extra rooms) will definitely increase the value of your property.
You can also...
Refinish your front door if it needs it. A medium red or medium dark green are always nice.
Paint the house inside and out.
Paint your floors instead of carpet or tile. It is an ever-growing trend which will also add value and is also inexpensive compared other flooring. Done right, they can also be very beautiful.
Update/upgrade lighting fixtures, new cover plates for switches and electrical outlets.
Add ceiling fans to the living room/den and bedrooms. They make the house more comfortable year round, and can help lower the electric bill especially in the summer.
Changing out appliances can be very expensive. Clean them up real good, if the exterior finish is poor just refinish them. Both Krylon and Rustoleum have paints specifically for appliances.

Keep in mind anything you do to add value to the house can raise your property taxes, especially for landscaping and/or additional structure to the house (pool, patio, extra room, storage shed, etc).

The most inexpensive way to add value to a house is to paint it, inside and out. Other than that, I would say you could replace and update faucets, sinks, light fixtures, outlets and outlet covers (if they are those old yellowish looking ones). My husband and I did all of this when we bought our house and it made a huge difference. My husband handled replacing the sinks and faucets and I handled all of the electrical stuff. These are all things that you can do over time and spread them out so it's more affordable (they don't require too much skill either). Landscaping is also a great way to add value to your home and you can save a ton by doing it yourself. Just buy plants that come in the one or three gallon containers instead of the five gallon containers and you will save a bundle.

I always know when we're moving house, the wife paints the front door green...there's a lesson.

"inexpensive" is a relative term but there is little you can do that doesn't cost money and adds value to your property.

As per my reply to your similar question, all these cosmetic improvements will speed up the sales process, not add value.

I will tell you here that there is no better way to enhance the value of any home any less expensive than to do some extensive painting projects on your own (to hire this done is NOT cheap)
One should go slow and be very careful and thorough with the work -- and choose color schemes that are pleasant and that blend together easy on the eye---with the right attention to this --a small amount of money and a dedicated work ethic can turn a moderately decent house into one with absolute Wow !!!

New paint...even if it's to just paint the trim boards all over the house or ceiling too. It'll brighten it up. Head to yard sales for some house decorations that won't cost a whole lot. Clean all the nooks and crannies, cabinets, closets and all. Hmmm...inexpensive ways.....toss out anything you haven't touched in the past three years. Good luck!
