I'm 20 years old and am wondering how exactly someone my age is supposed to act...I can't figure out whether I'm supposed be having fun, going to parties and enjoying being young; or if I'm supposed to be all serious, planning my future career and acting all mature. Basically I'm torn between the two and find it difficult to try and do both at once.

Steph.
great q!
You are right, both do apply at age 20! BALANCE is the key.
Focus on your goals, do the hard job to get to the career, education and act mature while on that path.

This is the time of trial and error, that difficulty or frustration is totally normal. Maturity is not easy, so take it one day and situation at a time. With maturity comes self respect and self confidence on a whole new level.

The very best way is organization, Get a day-timer and plan out the activities of life. EVERY one of them. That personal structure will help you enjoy the "free time" more and keep you directed and on course for all other items.

Schedule your time-well! So you can have fun!
Being responsible at any age is the key.

I worked really hard and played just as hard. I would take cheap vacations all over the USA and Mexico with all that saved (hard earned cash). I seldom wasted it on booze or parties. I went to midday movies with girlfriends and pot luck dinners at my apartment. I did date- only on the weekends. I made it real clear to the world that I was all about ACTION.

I did take Sunday off from everything. I did nothing but church that day, since I was used to waking up early, I went at 7am and was home back in bed by 9:30 am. I must say, I wish I had the same energy now as I did at 20. The obligations and commitments that I made on a personal level only made me better. No one knew when I left the bar and went home to shower that I was going to church, after partying all night. It was for ME!

Invest in yourself. You are worth every minute of the day.

I 'm 18 right now and went through that faze all ready; but I have learned some very importent things. When some one, or you for that mater, tells you to act your age, the answer should be that I already am acting my age. My parents were right about one thing(at least one thing I'll admit about) if you be your self, act like you do around family, but with a little more care about how you appeare in there eyes; you'll create a friend ship that will last longer then time it's self.
Now when I said, "care a little more about how you appeare in ther eyes." I ment immagin what you say before you spit it out. Think about as many questions that could arise from your statment as possible; and have answers ready for those questions as well.
And yes go to as many parties as posible, but while there keep thinking to your self if I do this and get caught in the situation how would an adult act. Or just think about as many different outcomes as posible, and be ready for anything that will come your way after words. But don't let these thoughts last more then 1 min. otherwise people will think you are slow and then again try to take advantage of your situation.
Before, I would think, yo! I'm young and I will never grow up. Now I look back 4 years to when I said that and obviously can see that I was wrong. Now every once in awile, I compare my age to my grandparents and say "thankyou" to the closest person around just to see how the react but the thanks really goes to the fact that I still have my hole life ahead of me and I can still realish in my youth.

P.S. I really am 18, I'm in a comunty college, and I'm a guy. Oh yea and if you find any misspelled words that is because the spell check does not work.

All serious is for the birds. Enjoy being young and you will enjoy being old. If you want to plan a career, make it something that you enjoy and will be happy doing. If you don't want a carreer, then there's nothing wrong with that. Have fun and enjoy life. It goes by quickly.

Keep doing both. This is a tough age, your only young once, but this is the time you have to start preparing for the rest of your life. Enjoy it while you can, the 20's go by really fast!

Try to understand yourself - look internally, what makes you happy - what you like, etc.
Don't "act" for others. Look for happiness internally and not externally.

20 year olds have many different interests. Everyone is diverse - there's no rule for behaving a certain way. The injustice you can do to yourself is to act to show others that you're doing something, which is not a reflection of yourself.

Age is just numbers and numbers is a big lie.

I'm 26 and I sometimes act like a kid of ten years old and sometimes like an old man.

Don't behave standardly like robots accordingly to your age, just be what you are, behave like you want to behave and live life the way you want.

And let them talk.

Work hard, Party harder.

spectate at the people who act your age and observe the people at parties. you then get the best of both worlds.
