They are not unhealthy. Not even uncomfortable if you get used to them. They're just.... smaller. Synthetic fiber underwear? That IS unhealthy.
My advice, if you want to wear thongs, try cotton ones 1st. (or from fabrics with high percentage of cotton)

They can increase risk of yeast infections, so if you're prone to them, I'd stay away. Not something I'd wear everyday . . .
