the thermal couple needs to be replaces. The thermal couple is a carbon tipped copper line that sits into the pilot light and tells the gas valve that there is a pilot flame so it may open when the tank calls for heat. They are easy to change but its better done by an individual who knows what their doing Good Luck

Yep, it's the thermo cpl. They are cheap and easy...I guess it's your lucky day.......(Looks like a small tube) This shuts off the gas wgen it senses there is no heat from the pilot light......OR your pilot light may need to be adjusted higher. Either way call a repairman, he'll be in and out inside of a 1/2 hour.

Grumpy is probably correct. How old is this heater. If you can afford it, it's probably time for a new one anyway. You'll save money in the long run, as the new models are more efficient.

They aren't really that hard to change either.

Get a repairperson to change the thermocouple. Sounds like it is faulty. DO THIS RIGHT AWAY! It can be dangerous!
