i don't know if it's the loudness so much as the clarity - if it's loud and distorted, it DOESN'T sound better, but with a good system, the louder it is, the more clarity you get, the more "in tune" (no pun intended) you get with the music, it can completely envelop you, no outside distractions. Yeah, nothing like good, loud music.

I persume you are talking about recorded sound through speakers.
I believe the reason is the sound waves are better reproduced as the speakers have to be driven. When the speakers are producing loud sounds the air movement is greater so you pick up more sound vibration. It is akin to looking at very small print - yes you can read it but it is not as enjoyable as reading a normal size print. With low sound you have to LISTEN very hard to hear it so it is not as enjoyable - also the background sounds - traffic etc are not blocked out so you have to try and 'not' hear them.
Very loud sound such as night clubs you will FEEL the sound as well as they have very powerful soundsystems that move even more air so you vibrate in time to the music and become as one with it.

I believe it sounds better because you can hear and feel the different parts of the music hence you get an all round listening experince of the track the way it was designed to be heard by the song writer.

Because since its so loud, it totally and completely takes you over into the music and you really get into it. And then you can hear all the intricacies of the sounds and beats, and its just amazing!
You can tell I love music... =]

you could hear all the little things you wouldn't normally hear while listening to the song at normal volume..
you could hear the intricacies of the guitar riffs and of the drums, the vocalist's voice sounds a whole lot better, and the emotion just touches your soul..
try listening with phones, too, it;s just as good

Not all music sounds better loud! I would guess it is because once it gets loud enough it becomes a full-body experience as you get massaged by sound waves. Very sensual!

Not to me, it doesn't. I never got it why all of my friends wanted their tunes cranked up so high. To me, that volume is painful - I've left bars and shows when it gets too loud. Those that listen to their music this loud will be deaf by age 50, I bet.

It depends how good your hi-fi is.
I've got B&W 603series, floorstanding speakers, and they have incredible bass at loud volumes, whether it's pop, rock or classical.
The better your system, the more detail you will hear, and your enjoyment of the music will increase.
