Core samples was the way for a long time.

The ancients depended on the cracks in the earth to bring such things to their attention. Coal was found this way. Its burning qualities was probably discovered when some ancient man built a fire in a cave/hollow with coal in it.

Lets supose you lived back in 200 bc or something along those lines.. Walking along a river bank, or through a field you noticed some crystal formations jutting up out of the ground, yet you have no idea they are called "Crystal Formations".. Amazed you picked up this new found object. But when you picked it up you uncover more. You started to dig. Soon other travelers come walking by. They asked what did you find?... You show them the unknown item. One in the crowd proclaims, He must have it and would give you "x" amount for it.. you sell the items to him. In-turn this starts a frenzy. Others want this item to, so your forced to dig deeper.
In other words.. most rocks, stones, and minerals can be found atop the ground some placed there over time, While others have been unearthed by winds, rain etc. So when there is one.. there is sure to be more just under the surface.
