Yep, too many times (you would think I would have learned after the first time.) I also did the "isn't he cute?" when it was a girl, or my best idiot of the year "when is your baby due?" (and nope, she wasn't pregnant.) Guess I will learn not to talk out of turn.

When confronted with a new doting mother the best thing to say is "what an adorable baby, what name did you decide on"? If the baby is particularly ugly (as some are) you pick out something nice to comment on. eg: what lovely colour eyes" etc. You need never mention the sex of the baby at all if you keep your wits about you. What you don't do is upset a new mother as she is already in a very hormonal state. Remember the old adage: if you can't say anything nice, keep your mouth shut".

Actually, I was the one being told how gorgeous my daughter was, but my "Daughter" was a boy! He was a very pretty baby, so it never made me mad. I purposely dressed him like a boy, always in blue and something with footballs, cars...etc... on it and people would still call him a she! This went on until he was about six months old. I guess after six months he suddenly looked more like a little boy! He's 8 now and gets all embarrassed when I tell him about it!

I remember taking my daughter out to the shop when she was about 3-4 months old. She had been born with thick hair, and by this age it was curling,so I put a little fabric hair band on her. She was also wearing a pastel floral print dress with cute little matching shoes. Pretty girlie, right? A woman walked up,looked at my daughter, and said,'What a handsome little boy!!' When I said it was a girl-she gave me a rather doubtful look and suggested I dress her more feminine!!!

No, but I have done it the other way round when I met a girl baby dressed in bright red and black stripes.
I also said to my toddler the other day "leave that man alone" before realising that it was in fact a woman - a very feminine one with long hair, make-up and dangly earrings too!

Embarrassed to say. YES. Well for god's sake babies all look the same. That's why, they have blue for a boy and pink for a girl. It's to give the rest of us a clue

Yes , but usually I look at the blanket or clothes color and go from there.......if the baby is wearing a sleeper with sailboats on it I am safe in calling it a boy.

Yes, quite a few times, especially when the baby is dressed in yellow or red clothes. My back-up is "Well he has such a lovely angelic face..." It works for me anyway
