A Lynxes ear tufts enhance thier hearing, acting kind of like antenna to pick up vibrations in the air. The reason why they have ear tufts is because of natural selection, the tufts give them an advantage in hunting so it is a desirable trait. There are other theories but they are not supported by evidence. One is that the tufts keep the lynxes ears from freezing in winter, but the Caracal also has ear tufts and does not experience winter, again it has also been supposed that the tufts help to confuse thier primary prey (Snowshoe hare) because they resemble rabbit ears, again the Caracal(desert lynx) who also has ear tufts does not hunt hares. The reason why they are black is anybody's guess it probably has to do with visibility and camoflage.

Basically David it's a method of disguise for young teenaged lynxs, they dip their furry little eyes in black ink to stop their mum recognising them when they go out smoking.

They are perfectly camouflaged when floating in a really lovely 'creme brulee'.
