Why do they?I have always wondered?

Sorry David, having given you a facetious answer on your "twin" question, I though I should give a more serious one here :

It's possible that it's for helping in communicating with other lynxes. Ears are used a lot in felines for communicating mood (just have a look at a cat when its angry, scared, confused, happy, the ears give the game away).

So if ears are used in communicating, then having black tips to them would highlight the message.

PS I don't KNOW this, I'm not a zoologist, just a guess.

Basically David it's a method of disguise for young teenaged lynxs, they dip their furry little eyes in black ink to stop their mum recognising them when they go out smoking.

Isn't it protection from sunburn? Tips of the ears are very susceptible to skin cancer (in cats) so black tips would protect them from this (in the same way that humans from hot countries have darker skin to protect from sun damage).
