what is being done to protect peoples confidentiality, is there a confidentiality act?

There are confidentiality laws in most countries that restrict what information can be shared between organizations.

There are also such acts as the Equal Opportunity act in the US to prevent discrimination.

To my knowledge there is no confidentiality act. I do know that there is such a thing as confidentiality between a lawyer or a doctor and their client.

There is an electronic privacy act in the EU. In the U.S., however, it's open season on confidentiality.
